As a storyteller, I have always believed that the most meaningful journeys are not the ones that take us farther from home, but the ones that lead us back to who we were always meant to be. Home of the Soul was born from that belief.
This is more than a story about returning to a hometown. It is a story about faith, purpose, forgiveness, and the undeniable pull of community. It explores the question many of us wrestle with: What if success isn’t measured by how far we’ve traveled, but by where we’re called to serve?
Our protagonist leaves his small hometown after college to serve his country in the United States Army. Through years of sacrifice, discipline, and leadership, he builds a successful career as a senior executive in the technology industry. By every worldly standard, he has achieved the American dream. Yet despite his accomplishments, there remains an emptiness that promotions, titles, and success cannot fill.
When he is unexpectedly called back home, he is confronted not only by the people he left behind but also by the man he used to be. Reconnecting with his high school sweetheart forces him to remember the dreams, values, and faith that first shaped his life. As old relationships are restored and new purpose begins to emerge, he discovers that home is not merely a place on a map—it is where God reminds us who we are.
Faith is at the heart of Home of the Soul, but it is presented through authentic relationships rather than perfection. This film is about God’s quiet work through ordinary people, churches, neighborhoods, and lifelong friendships. I wanted to create a film that resonates with anyone who has ever left home in pursuit of something greater, only to discover that the greatest calling may have been waiting where it all began. Whether someone has served in the military, climbed the corporate ladder, or simply searched for purpose, I hope they recognize themselves in this journey.
Ultimately, Home of the Soul reminds us that while our careers may define what we do, our faith, our relationships, and our communities define who we are. Sometimes God doesn’t call us to go farther—He calls us home.
It is my hope that audiences leave this film encouraged to reconnect with their families, invest in their communities, embrace reconciliation, and listen for the voice of God calling them toward their true purpose. SYNOPSIS
David Carter is at the pinnacle of corporate success in Atlanta, recently closing a $14.2 million deal that cements his status as a “surgical” strategist in a world that wasn’t built for people like him. His life is interrupted by news of his father Henry’s death, an event that pulls him back to his roots in Maple Grove, North Carolina, a place he fled years ago to escape the weight of family expectations and small-town limitations.Upon his arrival, David is treated as a “prodigal son” by his sister Angela, the local pastor, and his brother Marcus, who resent his long absence. While David initially intends to sell the family home and return to Atlanta, he is drawn into the community’s struggle to renovate the dilapidated community center and the upcoming Fall Festival honoring his father’s legacy.A chance encounter at a local diner reconnects David with his high school sweetheart, Vanessa Brooks, and her bright, tech-savvy teenage daughter, Jasmine. As David mentors Jasmine in coding, he begins to see his own stubbornness and curiosity reflected in her. A visit to the Cape Fear Museum of History further anchors David in his identity, as he reflects on the Wilmington Massacre of 1898 and the resilience of the African American families who rebuilt after their community was silenced.The emotional stakes escalate when Vanessa is hospitalized with a progressive lung condition and finally reveals the truth: David is Jasmine’s biological father. Faced with the reality of his father’s hidden pride in him—discovered through a box of unmailed letters—and the chance to finally be the man his family needs, David decides to stop running.In a final act of restoration, David uses his resources to reopen the Maple Grove Community Center. During the Fall Festival, he publicly honors his father’s memory and, in front of the community and the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church congregation, he asks for Jasmine’s blessing to be her father and proposes to Vanessa, choosing a life defined by faith and family over corporate titles.
